Abstract

1297447 Electric treater for oils PETROLITE CORP 26 March 1971 7961/71 Heading C5E An electric treater comprises a container having an inlet 16, an outlet 20, an electric treating chamber having electrodes 60 and 70, and two spaces 30 and 30<SP>1</SP> bounded by foraminous members 31, 32, 31<SP>1</SP> and 32<SP>1</SP>. The spaces 30 and 30<SP>1</SP> contain a material such as open-pore polyurethane foam, stainless steel wool, cotton, polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluoroethylene, polypropylene, solid caustic, spheres of glass or metal, rock salt, clay or bauxite. The inlets 35 and 35<SP>1</SP> can be used to pass the material through the spaces 30 and 30<SP>1</SP>. The electrodes 60 can be corrugated and these and the container 10 are earthed; the electrodes 70 comprised spaced rods disposed in planes between the electrodes 60 and are connected to a high voltage A.C. or D.C. source to maintain a field, e.g. of 4-10/TV per inch. The container is horizontal or inclined at up to 30 degrees to the horizontal. Each electrode can be in a vertical or horizontal plane. The oil is passed through a distributer 18 and then through a pretreat electrode 50 which can be foraminous or made of concentric rings; the oil from the pump 45 can be mixed with a liquid, e.g. water, from 46. The apparatus can be used to remove water from a jet fuel before entering a storage tank or on passing into a tank of a plane and to remove residual acid from an acid treated 150-350‹ F. naphtha.
