Abstract

1297215 Continuous emulsion polymerization FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AG 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970] 22229/71 Heading C3P The continuous emulsion polymerization of ethylene, vinyl chloride and an acidic monomer or salt thereof, optionally with a vinyl ester, is effected by introducing the monomers with water and a water soluble initiator into the bottom of a vertical reactor, or a series of such reactors, having a diameter to height ratio of 1 : 5 to 1 : 70, polymerizing at 20-100‹ C. and at least 10 atms., discharging polymer emulsion from the top and recycling unreacted monomers; the feed comprises 20-60 parts of vinyl chloride or a mixture thereof with vinyl ester, e.g. vinyl acetate, 100-3000 parts of ethylene and 100 parts of an aqueous phase containing 0À2-0À5 part of initiator, 0À3-9À5 parts of acidic or salt monomer, preferably a salt of a maleic half ester, e.g. monocyclohexyl maleate, and optionally an emulsifying agent so that the copolymer contains by weight 50-70% vinyl chloride or vinyl chloride/vinyl ester, 20-48% ethylene and 2-10% acidic or salt monomer and the emulsion contains 0-2% of an emulsifier, based on the polymer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 989,678.
