Abstract

1297134 Producing fault-free articles by sawing IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 March 1970 [10 April 1969] 18388/69 Heading B5L A device which causes a saw or like cutting device D to be operated to cut a substantially flat substantially rigid moving article when it senses a discontinuity or unacceptable unevenness in the under surface thereof, comprises a pair of spring urged arms, e.g. 2, pivoted at one end to a fulcrum and having at their other ends a long and thin feeler 1a and a short and thin feeler 2a respectively, and a device 16 which senses relative movement of the arms and causes the saw to operate when the feelers move relative to each other as they sense a discontinuity or unevenness. As described the device is used in cutting laminates comprising a continuous foam core, and a plurality of discrete facing sheets A, B separated by gaps C or overlapped. The laminates are fed in the direction of the arrow and the feelers 1a, 2a are urged into contact with the facing sheets by springs 19. When a gap C reaches the feelers, the feeler 2a moves into the foam, and the relative movement of the arms causes actuation of an inductive proximity limit switch or microswitch 16, which in turn operates the circular saw D. To ensure that the saw operates above a gap in the support table for the laminates, the switch 16 may be linked to the saw by a time delay or by a device which measures the distance moved by the laminate. Alternatively, the switch 16 causes a clamping device to operate which causes the saw D to move along with the laminate whilst cutting. The position of the feelers is adjustable relative to the position of the gap in the support table. The device may include two saw blades for cutting the leading and trailing edges of laminates simultaneously.
