Abstract
1296686 Making polymer compositions MONSANTO CO 12 Nov 1969 [13 Nov 1968] 55487/69 Headings C3B C3P and C3R [Also in Division C7] A polymer composite containing oriented filler is produced by mixing a filler with a prepolymer system or with an inviscid molten polymer, the filler being mobile and dispersible in the prepolyner system or the molten polymer, applying a D.C. electric field to give rise to electro-kinetic effects to orient the filler and causing at least sufficient polymerization of the prepolymer system or at least sufficient cooling of the molten polymer to hold the filler in position before removing the electric field. The prepolymer system may be a polyester, polyimide, epoxy, vinyl or polyurethane system. The filler may be particles or fibres and various forms of silica, silicates, clays, glass fibre, metals or their oxides or salts may be used. The electric field may have a strength in the range 100 to 15,000 volt. cm.<SP>-1</SP> The use of electrodes of various shapes is referred to and the electrodes may be in direct contact with the liquid or insulated therefrom by air, vacuum or solid dielectric.
