Abstract

1296257 Inductive signalling PICKERANDREX X-RAY AS 30 Sept 1970 [1 Oct 1969] 46445/70 Heading H4U An apparatus for controlling equipment mounted on a motor-driven crawler displaceable inside a pipe R comprises an electromagnet EM which is placed on the outside of the pipe in a predetermined position relative to a welded seam W and energized with alternating current from a source G. A detector is mounted on the crawler and comprises three iron-cored coils Sa, Sb, Sc, which via amplifiers and limiters Fa, Fb, Fc, and rectifiers Ea, Eb, Ec, apply two-state signals to a logic circuit LE which are coded in accordance with the positions of the coils relative to the electromagnet EM. In operation, when the crawler reaches the desired position as shown, coils Sa, Sc will produce an output and Sb no output and this signal 101 via lead g will stop the motor M. Then the switch A is opened and closed a predetermined number of times, producing the signal 000 at each closure, whereby the logic circuit LE supplies a signal d and brings X-ray equipment RU into use for a predetermined time to test the quality of the weld. The magnet EM is then moved in the required direction of movement and the crawler is set in motion again. Outputs e, f control the return and forward runs respectively. To increase the accuracy of the stopping position, the centre channel is arranged to have a smaller time constant in the smoothing circuit Eb than in the smoothing circuits Ea, Ec of the other channels.
