Abstract

1295839 Inverting WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 17 Feb 1970 [28 Feb 1969] 10718/69 Heading H2F In an inverter, triggering pulses for at least two alternately conducting controlled rectifiers 4...8 are derived at a time before the zero of the output voltage by a circuit dependent on the output voltage and on its differential so as to ensure adequate extinction interval. As shown in Fig. 7 an inverter comprising a bridge of thyristors 4... 8 feeds an induction heater winding connected across output terminals B, D. The thyristors are triggered in pairs shortly before the output voltage passes through zero. Resistor 15 and capacitor 14 respectively provide currents dependent on the output voltage and on its differential. Transistor 34 provides pulses corresponding to half cycles of one polarity of the combined current through 14 and 15; these pulses are steered by transistors 37, 38, 41, 44 to appropriate pulse generators 31, 32 feeding the respective pairs of thyristors 4... 8. In Fig. 6 (not shown) a pair of circuits 14, 15 are supplied from a centre tapped secondary winding of a transformer connected across the output terminals B, D, each circuit feeding a respective transistor 34, diode 33 combination. In Fig. 5 (not shown) a common pair of components 14, 15 supplies pulse generators of opposite conductivity type. In Fig. 10 (not shown) resistor 15 is bridged by a pair of Zener diodes and resistors connected across a conventional diode bridge so that the firing angle is dependent on output voltage. In Fig. 8a, components 14, 15 are replaced by an RL combination bridged by a zero passage detector 49. The resistor R may be connected in series with a baretter or the inductor may be made saturable so as to make the conduction angle a function of output voltage. In Fig. 13 (not shown) a current transformer is included on the D.C. side of the inverter so that the conduction angle is also a function of current.
