1295432 Phenol derivatives IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Sept 1969 [19 Sept 1968] 44624/68 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula where X is acyl, aroyl, nitro, cyano, aldehyde, carbalkoxyketo or a group of the formula A is a group of the formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl, one R<SP>2</SP> is hydroxyl and the other is hydrogen, n is 1-3, B is hydrogen, a group A or alkyl, substituted alkyl, substituted alkylthio, aralkyl, aryl, acyl or aroyl and Y is alkyl, alkoxy, amino, substituted amino or a group of the formula with the proviso that there should not be more than two groups in the molecule. The compound may be prepared by reacting (1) a compound of the first formula wherein A is an alkali metal or a monovalent group containing an alkaline earth metal atom attached directly to the carbon atom attached to A, which may be formed in situ by reacting a compound of the first formula wherein A is H with a suitable alkali or alkaline earth metal derivative, with a compound of the formula D-Z where D is a group of Formula II and Z is halogen, dialkylamino or quaternary ammonium, (2) a compound of the first formula wherein B is hydrogen with an alkali or alkaline earth metal or derivative thereof which will replace the hydrogen atom represented by B with an alkali metal atom or alkaline earth metal atom attached to a monovalent group and reacting the compound so obtained with a compound of the formula E-Z where E is alkyl, aralkyl, acyl or aroyl or (3) a compound wherein A and B are each hydrogen with a compound of the formula D-Q where Q is halogen, hydroxyl or a group of the formula O-D in the presence of a Lewis acid type catalyst to replace the hydrogen represented by B. Compounds of the first formula wherein X is acyl and Y is alkoxy may be treated with alkali to produce 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxyphenylalkane carboxylic acids. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,165,226, 1,217,222 and 1,226,371.
