Abstract

1295119 Investigation of radiation sources COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 2 Dec 1970 [3 Dec 19691 57283/70 Heading G1A A radiation source emitting e.g. X- or y-rays or electrons, is investigated by detectors in an evacuated enclosure, liquified gas cooling means being provided for the detectors. The source under test is mounted at the end of rod C 5 , which is movable by mircometer screw C 10 to a required position. An airlock E is provided to allow changing of samples without letting down the vacuum in chamber D. The detectors, two of which may be used for coincidence measurements, are mounted on holders at the ends of rods D 6 which are movable by micrometer screws and guided by members D 22 sliding along rods D 23 . Preamplifiers are mounted in spaces D 18 . The detectors which may be lithium diffused germanium or silicon junction devices are cooled by liquified nitrogen from reservoir A circulating via tubes D 11 , D 14 , through the detector holders and back via tubes D 16 , D 13 . Suitable pumping and valving apparatus is described. The source investigated may be radio-active, and the analysis X-ray or electron spectrometry (silicon detector) or y-ray spectrometry (germanium).
