Abstract

1294803 Gas turbine engine fuel systems GENERAL MOTORS CORP 15 July 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 33272/71 Addition to 1233845 Heading F1G [Also in Divisions B1 B2 F4] A fuel supply system for a combustion engine, having at least one fuel delivery nozzle with small and large ports, comprises a source of pressurized fuel connected to at least one inlet of a separator device, the device having a first outlet for the delivery of uncontaminated fuel to the ports; a regulator mechanism for controlling the delivery to the small ports and two further outlets, connected to a common supply line, for the delivery of contaminated fuel to the large ports. Fig.5 shows a gas turbine engine fuel system in which a pump 6 feeds fuel to the tangential inlet 32 of a centrifugal separator 70 which separates contaminents from the fuel. Clean fuel leaves the separator 70 via a filter 15 and a central outlet 18 and passes to the tangential inlet 32 of a second centrifugal separator 7 while contaminated fuel leaves via a tangential outlet 24 at the periphery of the separator. A second tangential outlet 36 is provided adjacent the filter 15 to remove fine or light contaminants which would tend to clog the filter. Both outlets 24,36 discharge via a restrictor 72 and a line 22 to the large ports of burner nozzles. The central outlet 18 of the separator 7 delivers via a fuel control 8 to the small ports of the burner nozzles, while the other outlets 24,36 of the separator 7 deliver via the line 22 to the large ports. At low rates of flow all the fuel entering the separator 7 has passed through the smaller separator 70 and is therefore already clean. At high rates of flow, a valve 74 is opened by the pressure drop across it to allow untreated fuel to pass directly to the separator 7. If the filter 15 of the separator 7 becomes clogged, a valve 76 opens to by-pass this separator. In a modification, Fig.4 (not shown), the separator 70 and the by-pass valves 74, 76 are omitted, and the separator 7 has a second tangential inlet (62) which is supplied through a valve (63) which opens only at high rates of flow into the separator. The filter 15 comprises a screen 42, Fig.6, wrapped around end members 51,54 which are connected by a core 46 having cylindrical end portions 47,48 joined by three posts 50. The screen 42 is supported by a helical coil 44. To reduce turbulence inside the screen 42, the coil 44 is handed so that it approaches the outlet end of the screen in the direction of rotation around the axis corresponding to the direction of swirl of the fuel in the separator.
