Abstract
1294406 Open - celled polymeric articles POLYMER CORP Ltd 23 March 1970 [5 May 1969] 13853/70 Heading C3C An article having a porous cellular structure with cell size of not more than 1000 microns is made by freezing a solution of at least one non- flowable polymer dissolved in an organic solvent capable of freezing to a crystalline state, the solution being subjected to a compacting force during freezing whereby a compacted solidified composition is formed having the shape of the article, the solidified composition having homogeneously dispersed therein the solvent in crystalline form, exposing the composition to a pressure below the pressure of the triple point to a temperature below the m.p. of the solvent, and removing by sublimation all the solvent. The polymer may be a thermoplastic polymer having a second order transition point above -25‹ C., a crystalline polymer containing more than 10% crystallinity at -25‹ C. or a high molecular weight amorphous polymer free of cold flow. The article may be in the form of a sheet or filter element and may consist of interconnecting cells and of walls constituting less than 0À8 volume/volume of the article. The polymers and solvents used in the examples were (1) polyisoprene in benzene; (2) a block copolymer of the type ABA where A was a poly-(alpha-methyl styrene) block and B is a polybutadiene block, in benzene; (3) as (2) and also a block copolymer of the SBA type where S is a polystyrene block and B and A are as before, in benzene; (4) styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer in 1,4-dichlorobenzene; (5) a phenol formaldehyde resin in 1,4-dichlorobenzene; and (6) a mixture of polyvinyl chloride, a graft polymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, and a rubbery butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer in 1,4-dichlorobenzene.
