Abstract
1294097 Focusing devices CANON K K 14 Nov 1969 55818/69 Heading G2J [Also in Division H4] An optical system comprises two photo-electric elements separated by an image splitting plane, an objective lens, image splitting means and a cylindrical lens the axis of which is perpendicular to the image splitting plane. The cylindrical lens 5 in conjunction with the objective lens 1 produces two images of the object. The first image is produced by the objective lens 1 and the cylindrical lens 2 in the horizontal direction. At the elements 4 1 , 4 2 , this image is defocused and therefore the intensity of the image varies only in the horizontal direction. The second image in the vertical direction is due only to the objective lens 1 and is focused on to the photo-electric elements 4 1 , 4 2 . In a first embodiment the image splitting means is a split prism 3 which deflects the upper and lower halves of the image in opposite directions. The images are only aligned when the image is properly focused on the photo-electric elements 4 1 , 4 2 . In this case the elements have equal outputs. In a second embodiment the image splitting means is provided by having the elements spaced at equal distances from and on opposite sides of the wanted focal point (F). When the outputs of the elements are equal the image will be focused at the correct point. The outputs from the photo-cell elements are used to control the automatic focusing arrangement.
