Abstract

129,396. French, G. F. May 3, 1918. Cartridge belts of the kind wherein two strips of fabric strengthened at their edges by wovenin cords are united together at equal intervals by weaving to form pockets shaped to fit the cartridges, are made in the manner described below. Fig. 4 shows two separate plies of material, one formed of warps a and wefts b and the other of warps c and wefts d, united at intervals bv additional warps c. to form cartridge pockets. Two, four, or more shafts are provided in the loom for the ordinary warps, and further sets of two or more shafts (or lingoes) for the binding- threads, these latter being controlled by a jacquard. The pockets, Fig. 6, are shaped to suit the cartridges, and cords f, Fig. 3, or extra warps are inserted at or near one or both edges of the belt to form ridges for the engagement of the belt-feed mechanism. Stretching may be prevented by weaving the belt between the pockets with mercerized binding-warps or with extra wefts. One strip may be woven narrower than the other, Fig. 5, to facilitate insertion of the cartridges. The end portions of the belt are made plain, or the pockets are stitched down. One of the Provisional Specifications also describes a belt in which the edges are unconnected, so that the points of the cartridges enter easily.
