Abstract

1293817 Chromium dioxide FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AG 3 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 52131/70 Heading C1A Ferromagnetic chromium D dioxide, having a rutile structure, is prepared by allowing a proton donor to act upon a melt of at least one dichromate in the presence of at least one compound of the elements F, Mg, Zn, Sn, Ti, Sb, V, Nb, Ta, Te, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru and Pd and at a temperature of from 250‹ to 500‹ C. Proton donors are defined as compounds which yield protons in the presence of water (e.g. acids, acid halides or acid anhydrides). The reaction may be carried out at pressures up to 50 atmospheres. At least one inorganic salt e.g. nitrate of an alkali metal and/or an alkaline earth metal may be added to the melt. Compounds of the elements listed above may be added in a quantity of from 0À01% to 10% by weight based on the dichromate melt. Antimony oxide and tellurium oxide were added as modifying compounds in the examples. In one example chromium dioxide in the form of needles 0À8Á long and 0À034Á wide is obtained.
