Abstract

1293796 Welding by fusion WALTON & CO (WOLVERHAMPTON) Ltd6Aug 1970 [21 Aug 1969] 41656/69 Heading B3R An adjustable positioning support for welding comprises a base 11 having an inclined upright 14 and divergent feet 12, a housing 15 pivotably mounted on the base at 16 and movable in a vertical plane by an hydraulic jack 17 reacting on the base, an axle 19 journalled by bearings 21 in the housing 15, and a workpiece mounting arm 24 pivotably mounted at 25 on an extension 23 of the axle and movable with respect to the axle by an hydraulic jack 28 reacting on the extension 23. The arm 24 has a workpiece mounting adapter 26. The extension 23 is carried by a brake drum 22 which is welded to the axle and co-operates with a brake band 43. Hydraulic supply to the jacks is provided from a base-mounted pump manually operated by a handle 31. To allow continuous rotation of the axle without winding-up of hoses, the connections to the opposite sides of the piston of the jack 28 are made via pipes (not shown), a housing-mounted control valve having a lever 32, connectors 33, a rotary union 35-38 between a non-rotating block 34 and the axle 19, axle ducts 39, 40, connectors 41, 42 and flexible hoses (not shown). In operation a workpiece is positioned on (e.g. by a forklift truck), and secured to, the adapter 26, and the jack 28 is operated until the centre of gravity of the workpiece together with the axle mounted support members lies on the axle axis, so that the workpiece may be easily rotated by hand, the brake band 43 being applied to lock the workpiece in a particular rotational position. The workpiece height may be adjusted by the jack 17.
