1293323 Parking meters KIENZLE APPARATE GmbH 22 July 1971 [25 July 1970] 34383/71 Heading G4V A combined coin testing and time setting device, particularly intended for use in parking meters, comprises means for effecting a thickness test and a diameter test arranged such that if both tests are satisfied the time setting means is actuated and if one or both tests indicate counterfeit the time setting means is rendered inoperative. A coin 14, when inserted, disengages a blocking portion 15 of lever 11 from the path of an abutment 10 on coin carrier 3, the coin carrier thereby being freed to carry the coin into contact with pin 18 of a sensing lever 17. The consequent amount of rotation of lever 17 about pivot 16, and hence of a disc 22 via gear 20, depends on the diameter of the coin. Disc 22 carries adjustable setting means 27 which correspond in their peripheral positioning along slot 26 to various different diameter coins acceptable by the device and in their radial positioning to the amount of time purchased by such coins. If a coin of acceptable diameter is inserted, disc 22 is rotated to bring the respective setting means 27 to a position where nose 46 of a second pivoted sensing lever 41, released by cam 40, engages setting means pin 47. Such engagement prevents return of disc 22 to its initial position under the action of spring 23 and a time setting lever 30 is thereby freed by removal of an abutment (24), Fig. 1 (not shown), on disc 22 from the path of a pin 25. When pin 25 is freed, lever 30 pivots anti-clockwise about pivot 31 until pin 25 contacts the outer radial end of the setting means 27 engaged by lever 41, thereby setting the time mechanism, see Figs. 3 and 4 (not reproduced). In addition to the diameter test, a plate 60, Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 (not shown), swing- able on a rod 63, has a nose 64 which engages a coin in carrier 3. If the coin has a central aperture or is too thin, plate 60 swings under the action of a spring (not shown) sufficiently to disengage lever 41 from disc 22 (assuming the coin to be of an acceptable diameter) by cooperation between a nose on plate 60 and a nose 66 on lever 41. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), plate 60 is U-shaped and nose 64 is adjustable. All coins inserted are transported to a coin box.
