Abstract

1293055 Splint FISHER & PAYKEL Ltd 21 Aug 1970 [29 Aug 1969] 40296/70 Heading A5R A splint for use with a fractured femur comprises a malleable discontinuous ring 1 attached to a pair of extendible legs 4 terminating in a foot portion; the legs being held firmly at fixed positions on the periphery of the ring and pivotably around the plane of the ring. End portions 6 of the legs have apertures 5 for receiving the ring and are retained in position on the ring by enlargement of the ring on either side of them. The legs comprise upper tubular portions 3 into which the lower portions of rod are inserted telescopically and fixed by compression clamps which may be locked adjustment of leg length and thus of the ring obliquity is therefor possible. Hooks 16 on an elastic cord 15 provide traction to the leg when attached to the leg or boot of the patient. The ring is covered with a flexible resilient material 8 which in turn is coated with soft leather 9, and which is continued to provide an overlap over the broken part of the ring. In a portable embodiment of the splint the tubular portions of the legs are formed in sections (31) (Fig. 4 not shown) which are assembled and connected to end portions 28 on the ring by the connection of male and female threaded joints. The splint may be dismantled and packed into a bag when the ring may be used as a handle. A tubular sling (40) may be slid around the splint, and a sling (27) attached to the splint by means of studs (24) has hook and eye type fasteners (25) (26) for engagement of the sling around the splint, Fig. 2 (not shown).
