Abstract
1292982 Ceramic-to-metal seals POST OFFICE 4 Feb 1970 [4 Feb 1969] 5825/69 Heading B3V [Also in Division H1] A method of bonding a ceramic body to one of nickel comprises placing a layer of Ti and one of Cu or Ag between the bodies and applying pressure and heat to alloy the metals. In an example, Fig. 2, a Ni core 3 containing a wafer of semi-conductor material is bonded to a alumina disc 2 and the disc to a Ni mounting stud 1 of the transistor by layers 5, 8 of Cu and layers 6, 7 of Ti. The assembly, in a graphite, Fig. 4, is compressed by a spring and outgased in a hydrogen atmosphere for 10 minutes at 1000‹ C. Next the assembly is heated inductively in a vacuum in the range 900-1000‹ C. for at least 2¢ minutes. Heating is reduced for at least a further 2¢ minutes to reduce the temperature to 700-770‹ C. for converting #-Ti to α-Ti. In another example, Fig. 3 (not shown), an improved joint is formed by recessing (11) one face of the mounting (1A) and using annular brazing washers locating over projections (10, 13) on the mounting (1A) and alumina disc (2A). The method may be used for bonding Ni to beryllia.
