Abstract
1292867 Cis - 1,4 - polybutadienes GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 10 March 1970 [9 April 1969 (2)] 11350/70 Heading C3P Butadiene, or a mixture thereof with another conjugated diene such as isoprene, is polymerized to high cis-1,4 polymers by contacting in an inert solvent with a catalyst comprising (A) at least one of (1) hydrides of Group II and III elements, (2) complexes of such hydrides, and (3) organo compounds of Group I, II and III elements; (B) at least one of (1) nickel salts of carboxylic acids, (2) organic complex compounds of nickel, (3) nickel tetracarbonyl, and (4) pi-bonded organonickel compounds; and (C) at least one fluorine containing compound selected from (1) fluorine containing carboxyl acids and anhydrides, alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylic acid esters, epoxides, ketones, phenols and peroxides, and (2) fluorine containing phosphoric acids and esteis thereof, and sulphonic acids HSO 3 R and sulphinic acids HSO 2 R, where R is fluorine, perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroaryl. Preferably, the mole ratio of A/B is 0À5/1 to 150/1, C/B is 0À5/1 to 300/1 and A/C is 0À04/1 to 4/1. Preferred components (A) are compounds of aluminium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium and lithium, (B) nickel octanoate and (C) fluorine containing alcohols, ketones, phenols, esters and phosphoric and sulphonic acids. The catalysts may be preformed or formed in situ, and the polymerization effected batchwise or continuously. Many suitable catalyst components are specified and examples describe the polymerization of butadiene in the presence of catalysts formed from nickel octanoate, triethyl aluminium and (I, II and VII) hexafluoroisopropanol, (III) hexafluoro-acetone, (IV) hexafluoroacetone sesquihydrate, (V) pentafluorophenol, (VI) hexafluoroacetyl acetone, (VIII) trifluoroacetone, 2 - aminohexafluoroisopropanol, trifluoroethanol, pentafluoropropanol, perfluoroheptanol, allyl trifluoroacetate, 1,1,1- trifluoroethyl trifluoroacetate or p-fluorophenol, (IX) HPO 2 F 2 and (X) HSO 3 F; and from nickel octanoate, triisobutyl aluminium and (VII) hexafluoroisopropanol.
