Abstract
1292720 Coating PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 8 April 1970 [9 April 1969] 16734/ 70 Heading B2E Substrates such as metal, glass, ceramic or stone are coated with a polyarylenesulphide or a sulphide polymer derived from polyhalosubstituted cyclic compounds containing unsaturation between adjacent ring stops and an alkali metal sulphide by applying a dispersion of finely divided particles of the polymer in an inert liquid medium which has a boiling point below the melting point of the polymer to the substrate which is maintained at a temperature above the melting point of the polymer thereby causing evaporation of the liquid and fusion of the polymer coating. The fused coating may be cured at 500-900‹F in an oxygen containing atmosphere for 5 minutes to 24 hours. The polymer preferably contains a repeating -RS-unit in which R is preferably. phenylene, biphenylene, napthylene, biphenylene ether or C 1 -C 6 alkyl substituted derivatives thereof and the polymer preferably has a melting point of at least 400‹F and an inherent viscosity of at least 0.1 (in chloronaphthalene at 206‹C). The liquid medium may be water, a glycol, an alcohol or a hydrocarbon. The dispersion suitably contains 10-60% wt of the particles which have a size of 3-30 microns and may be applied by spraying or flowing. The coatings may also contain surfactants fillers and pigments, e.g. TiO 2 and in the example these additives are applied separately from the polymer dispersion to heated iron cylindrical slugs.
