Abstract

1292452 Laminates MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 18 July 1969 [19 July 1968] 36389/69 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 E1 F2 and G1] For damping sub-sonic vibrations of a massive structure, such as a building, a damping unit consists of rigid layers 12, 14, 12<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, alternating with visco-elastic layers 15, 15<SP>1</SP> bonded to the rigid layers. The invention ascribes limits, appropriate to the envisaged application, on the flexural rigidity of the rigid layers and on the visco-elastic parameters of the layers 15, 15<SP>1</SP>. Suitable materials for the latter layers and methods for preparing them, are disclosed. The layers 12, 12<SP>1</SP> may be of 0À3-inch thick steel, the layer 14 of ¢-inch thick steel and the layers 15, 15<SP>1</SP> of a copolymer of 80% (by weight) iso-octyl acrylate and 20% acrylic acid. Terpolymers of iso-octyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid are also disclosed as suitable materials for the visco-elastic layers. The damping units are intended to be used with the elastomer in shear, e.g. as a coupling element between parts 40 and 41 of a multi-storey building to damp wind-induced or groundshock-induced vibrations.
