Abstract

1292166 Aromatic polycarboxylates PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 9 March 1970 [10 March 1969 (2)] 11160/70 Heading C2C Alkali metal aromatic carboxylates are disproportionated to form an aromatic polycarboxylate containing at least one additional carboxyl group per molecule by heating them in a substantially oxygen-free inert atmosphere in the presence of a disproportionation catalyst, e.g. an oxide, halide or carbonate of cadmium, zinc, iron, lead or mercury, which contains as an adjuvant one or more compounds of the formula R-X-M wherein R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical or a combination of two more such radicals, R having from 1 to 15 carbon atoms, X is an oxygen or sulphur atom and M is an alkali metal atom. Preferably an alkali metal carbonate is also present; the reaction temperature is 350-500‹ C. and the reaction pressure is 0-5000 p.s.i.g. The disproportionation may take place under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and/or carbon monoxide. Preferred adjuvants are phenol, potassium phenoxide or potassium thiophenoxide. In an example dipotassium terephthalate is produced from potassium benzoate. Suitable starting materials include the alkali metal salts of naphthalene-, anthracene- and phenanthrene-, mono-, di- or tri-carboxylic acids, phthalic acids and biphenyl carboxylic acid.
