Abstract

1292163 Photographic processes and apparatus therefor MITA INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 17 Feb 1970 [19 Feb 1969 22 Aug 1969 18 Nov 1969] 7657/70 Headings G2A and G2C Multi-coloured azo dye images are produced by exposing to light and heat simultaneously or successively in either order an assembly comprising an original and a diazotype material and also containing a volatile or sublimable coupler (a) disposed between the original and the material in areas corresponding to only part of the total image areas of the original whereby the diazonium compound is decomposed and coupler (a) is transferred to the exposed diazotype material and developing the exposed material in the presence of a coupler (b), which is slower than coupler (a), to produce an image of one colour in the areas where coupler (a) is transferred and an image of another colour in the areas corresponding with the remaining image of areas of the original. Coupler (a) may be applied to part of the back of an original or to a sheet which is placed between original and the material to cover part of the image areas. Up to three different couplers (a) may be applied to the back of the original; the methods of application being set out in Specification 1292164. Coupler (b) may be in the diazotype material or in the developer. The diazotype material may contain a dye, cellulose triacetate and dextrin. In the examples a mercury lamp is used as the heat and light source. As shown, original A and diazotype material B are fed on to endless belt 11 and exposed to light source (a mercury lamp) 5 and heat source (an infrared lamp) 6 in transparent cylinder 1 with reflective plates 2 and a cold air duct 3 which cools the light source. Alternatively, the cylinder may only contain a light source and the assembly may be subsequently exposed to a heat source. After exposure to both sources, the original A is separated from the diazotype material B either manually or by using separate suction chambers for both the original and the diazotype material (not shown), the original dropping into tray 13 while the diazotype material passes on to developer station 19 in which ammonia and steam are vapourized by heater 21 and pass through openings in wall 22 to develop the material. The endless belt 11 is cooled by cold air being blown through cooling duct 14. Gaseous development may be replaced by liquid development, the material A either passing through liquid developer or over a roller wetted by the developer. A temperature control mechanism may be used by having a detector detect the temperature of the cylinder and control the cold air-flow from the duct 2. Similarly duct 14 can be controlled to control the temperature of belt 11.
