Abstract

1292072 Cis-1,4-polybutadienes GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 10 March 1970 [9 April 1969] 11448/70 Heading C3P Butadiene, and mixtures thereof with other conjugated diolefins, are polymerized to high cis-1,4-polymers by contacting with a catalyst comprising (A) at least one of (1) monomeric and polymeric hydrides of Group II and III elements, (2) complexes of such hydrides, and (3) organo compounds of Groups I, II and III elements having at least one hydrocarbon radical directly attached to said elements; (B) at least one pi-bonded organonickel compound; and (C) at least one fluorine containing compounl selected from (1) boron fluoride and complexes thereof, (2) hydrogen fluoride and (3) metal fluorides. Preferred components (A) are compounds of aluminium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium and lithium; (B) are pi-crotyl nickel compounds; and (C) are boron trifluoride complexes and hydrogen fluoride. The catalysts may be preformed or formed in situ, and the polymerization effected batchwise or continuously, with or without inert hydrocarbon diluents. Many catalyst components are specified and examples describe the polymerization of butadiene in the presence of catalysts comprising bis-(pi-crotyl) nickel and (II) triethyl aluminium and BF 3 etherate, (III) triisobutyl aluminium and BF 3 etherate, (IV) diisobutyl aluminium hydride and BF 3 etherate, (V) diethyl aluminium fluoride and BF 3 etherate, (VI) triisobutyl aluminium and BF 3 phenolate, and (VII) triethyl aluminium, triisobutyl aluminium or diisobutyl aluminium hydride and hydrogen fluoride.
