Abstract

1291563 Lamps KODAK Ltd 30 Oct 1969 [8 Nov 1968] 53057/68 Heading F4R A linear illumination radiating device comprises a transparent elongate member 10 having substantially plane end surfaces one of which is intended to be located adjacent a source of illumination and the other of which has reflecting properties, a longitudinally extending light diffusing element 11, such as a stripe of matt white paint, being provided on a portion of the side surface of the member so that light which enters the end of the member adjacent the source is diffusively reflected by the element 11 and emerges through another portion 15 of the side surface of the member. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2 the member has three plane side faces 11a, 12, 13, all of width 2R, and a semi-cylindrical side face 15 of radius R which acts as a lens to focus the light reflected by the element 11 into a parallel beam. Various alternative cross-sectional shapes are contemplated for the member : it may, for example, have a cross-section in the form of a nearly triangular trapezium with the diffusing element at the apex. Alternatively, the surface 15 may be replaced by a cylinder of semi-elliptical section (Fig. 3) and the surfaces 12, 13 by silvered circular arcs.
