Abstract
1291242 Protecting mirrors and mirror production INSTITUT NATIONAL DU VERRE 9 June 1970 [12 June 1969] 29888/69 Heading B2E At least one surface of a glass mirror is protected from soiling or damage by applying at least one coating composition to the surface which forms a protective film and which may be peeled from the glass when the protection is no longer required. The coating composition may be a solution of a film-forming vinyl polymer, e.g. polyvinylchloride which may or may not be chlorinated or a copolymer of vinyl acetate and a vinyl ester of a branch chain acid or it may consist of two or more ingredients which react in situ to form a film, for example a solution of a partially polymerized polyester and a hardener, e.g. cobalt naphthenate and a second solution of a partially polymerized polyester and an accelerator, for example cyclohexane peroxide, may be separately applied to the glass sheet. The polyester is preferably the reaction product of a polyhydric glycol and maleic acid. In a mirror production method in which glass sheets are passed in flat lying positions sequentially through metallisation and painting stations the bottom surface of each sheet is provided with a protective film before reaching the metallisation station. In an embodiment, glass sheet S is passed over roll 1 dipping in a bath 2 of the coating composition and then over a pipe 4 through which hot air is passing. In another embodiment the coating composition is pumped from a container 7 through a longitudinal slot 6 in a tube 5 placed just below the surface of moving glass sheet. The slot 6 may be defined by rollers or bars and may be adjusted. Excess coating composition falls back into the bath 7. The coating is dried by hot air from nozzles 11 and 12. The coated glass is then washed, silvered and coppered and painted on the other surface to form mirrors. The protective skin may then be removed.
