Abstract

1289498 Coated glass CARL-ZEISS-STIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 26 Nov 1969 [27 Nov 1968] 57875/69 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] A glass article has coating for altering the transmissivity and/or reflectance of electromagnetic radiation from UV to IR regions comprising 50-95% of a component A and 5-50% of a component B, the latter Consisting of finely divided palladium or palladium oxide; component A consists of at least one oxide, the oxide(s) being chosen from the oxides of elements Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, K, Ca, Se, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Ta, W, Th, Pa, U. Preferably TiO 2 , SiO 2 or CeO 2 are used, the latter often in combination with up to 45% SiO 3 or TiO 2 . The palladium or palladium oxide has a mean particle diameter of 300Š and the thickness of the resulting layer is 20-300 mu. The coating process comprises mixing an organic solution of a chemical compound of one of the elements of component A with a solution of the palladium compound which either dissociates in solution or is soluble as a complex, followed by coating and heat treatment, at least 200‹C, preferably 350-450‹C, to give a strongly adherent and transparent oxide layer on the glass surface. Vacuum vapour coating and atomisation under vacuum are also used. Stabilisers, e.g. acids and amines may be added to prevent reduction of the palladium compound in solution. Glass having multilayered coatings including a layer as above have other layers of materials of lower refractive index.
