Abstract
1289462 Olefin polymerization MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 8 Jan 1970 [10 Jan 1969] 915/70 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized utilizing as catalyst a hydride or organometallic compound of a Group I, II or III metal, and a product obtained by contacting a titanium or vanadium oxyhalide, which may be formed in situ from a halide and air or oxygen, with an active anhydrous magnesium or zinc halide support having one or both of the following properties: (a) in the X-ray powder spectrum the diffraction line of highest intensity in the spectrum for the normal, inert halide, is less intense and broadened into a halo; (b) a surface area greater than 3 sq. m./g. The active support may be obtained by grinding an anhydrous zinc or magnesium halide, by decomposition of an organometallic compound of the formula RMgX, or RZnX wherein R is a hydrocarbon and X is halogen, by treating said organometallic compounds with at least a stoichiometric amount of a halogen containing compound, e.g. hydrogen chloride, or by dissolving the normal halide in an organic solvent, partially removing the solvent by evaporation, and completing the removal of the solvent under reduced pressure at a temperature above 100‹ C. In the examples ethylene is polymerized in n-heptane in the presence of H 2 with a catalyst comprising (iso C 4 H 9 ) 3 Al and (a) the reaction product of TiCl 4 , TiOCl 2 and non-active MgCl 2 ; (b) the product obtained by grinding anhydrous MgCl 2 and TiOCl 2 ; (c) the product obtained by grinding TiCl 3 , anhydrous MgCl 2 and air or oxygen; (d) a mixture of TiOCl 2 and the reaction product of C 2 H 5 MgCl in diethyl ether and HCl; (e) the product obtained by grinding TiOBr 2 and non- active MgBr 2 ; and (f) the reaction product of Ti 2 Cl 6 O in n-heptane and MgCl 2 , prepared by evaporating the solvent from a solution of MgCl 2 in methanol and heating at 300‹ C.
