1289332 Spreaders; hitches C VAN DER LELY NV 30 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 48092/ 69 Headings AID and A1P A device for spreading materials comprises a frame 1, a container 2 having a material outlet 44 and a spreading member 45 rotatable about a substantially vertical axis and is characterised in that the frame has a pair of ground wheels 4, 6 and, preferably, as shown an additional pair 3, 5 and the container has a sloping front wall 35 which is at an angle 36 of between 25‹ and 50‹ and preferably 30‹ to the horizontal, the lower end of the wall terminating rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, of the axes of rotation of the pair 4, 6 of ground wheels and the front and upper end of the wall ending forwardly of that pair of wheels. The container is mounted on the frame by generally inverted U-shaped support plates 17, 27, 18 on the right-hand side of the device (Fig. 1) and similarly on the other side. A drive shaft 50 which in use is connected at 98 to an output shaft of a towing vehicle drives the spreading member 45 via gearbox 47 and may also drive a "knocking" device comprising belt-driven cam 66 whose surfaces bear onto a spring-loaded knocking bar. 69 pivoted at 70, which bar by means of thrusting member 74 knocks against thrust plate 75 rigidly mounted on front wall 35 in order to loosen any compacted material in the container 2. The knocking device may be disconnected by means of wire 94 which is pulled and stop 95 being engaged in a slot 97. At the front end of frame I a spring loaded parallelogram link 81-90, Fig. 5, may be provided to compensate for unevenness of the ground and so as to isolate the vertical movement of the towing vehicle. In a further embodiment (Figs. 6, 7 not shown) two oppositely diagonal loading springs are provided. Ground wheels 3-6 may be independently mounted and spring, Fig. 4, and are rotatably mounted at 55 on arms 54 Fig. 2 which are secured to frame members 13 via coil springs 57. The spreading member 45 has a disc 45A which closes off the lower end of the outlet spout 44 and a metering member 46 which includes a generally cylindrical annulus which rests at its lower end against disc 45A and surrounds at its upper end the spout 44 and has at least one outlet port which can be closed to a chosen extent to control the volume of material issuing from the container 2.
