Abstract

1286815 Fluid heating element MORGANITE RESISTORS Ltd 24 Nov 1969 [25 Nov 1968 24 Oct 1969] 55865/68 and 52145/69 Heading H5H A fluid heating element comprises a selfsupport porous resistor permeable to fluid formed from an agglomeration of particles formed of at least two materials which have different electrical resistivities. The materials may be clay and carbon mixed in varying proportions to give a desired electrical resistance and held together by a non-vitreous, e.g. a temporary volatile or combustible, binder. The higher resistance material may be particles of calcined clay, flints, zirconia, talc, alumina or mixtures of these, the lower resistivity material may be carbon, and the binder may be ball clay, china clay, bentonite or their mixtures. The constituents are mixed together, with or without water, and fired in a non-oxidizing or reducing atmosphere at a temperature between 1000‹ and 1600‹ C. after being shaped by dry pressing, moulding or extrusion. The mixture is preferably granulated and sieved prior to shaping to produce the desired porosity. A suitable temporary binder for the dry mix is ethylene glycol. Terminals are formed by spraying nickel on the resistor. The resistor may be cylindrical, and if hollow, fluid flows through it from one cylindrical surface to the other. Alternatively the resistor may be in the form of a thick disc with one terminal at its centre and the other encircling its periphery, fluid passing axially through the disc. One or more surfaces of the resistor may be coated with thermal insulation formed by a mixture of the materials forming the resistor per se, but with the high resistivity component predominent. The or several resistors may be shunted across the contacts of an oil-immersed circuit breaker, to dissipate the energy on opening. They are threaded on an insulating rod to give a 15 ohm value for circuitbreakers in 5 to 6 kv. supplies. The resistors preferably have an anti-tracking coating.
