Abstract

1286673 Low M.W. polymers containing sulphone groups IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 July 1970 [16 April 1969] 19458/69 Heading C2C The invention comprises mixtures of polymers in which the individual species are either represented by the formula or by the formula wherein X represents a halogen atom, B<SP>1</SP> represents a bivalent aromatic radical having the terminal valencies connected to a benzene nucleus or two separate benzene nucleii present in the said bivalent aromatic radical, B represents a bivalent aromatic radical having at least one diphenylene sulphone grouping, the terminal valencies connected to two separate benzene nuclei! present in the said aromatic radical in o or p position to a sulphone group, and n is an integer, the distribution of said species being such as to provide low M.W. polymer of average M.W. in the range 750 to 5000. They may be obtained by heating together a double alkali metal salt of a dihydric phenol with a dihalogenodiphenyl sulphone in which the halogen atoms are in the o or p-positions to the sulphone group under anhydrous conditions and in the liquid phase of an inert, highly polar organic solvent, the molar ratio of the reactants lying in the range of from 1.8:1 to 1À1:1. Examples are given for the preparation of the polymer mixtures.
