Abstract

1286620 Fire fighting with ablative gels FACTORY MUTUAL RESEARCH CORP 29 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 61753/70 Heading A5A A method of fighting a fire in a space to be protected comprises generating a signal in response to a predetermined fire condition in the space and releasing an ablative gel from an elevated position in the space towards the floor thereof in response to the signal to form a sheet which acts as a fire-resistant wall. The ablative gel is formed in situ in response to the signal by the mixture of two fluids. In Fig. 1, pressurised tanks 10, 12 containing e.g. aqueous polyvinyl alcohol and aqueous borax are connected via 16, 18 to mixing chamber 14. Lines 16, 18 include valves 24, 26 which are normally closed and are opened by solenoids 28, 30 upon a signal from fire sensor 32 via conductors 34, 36. Mixing chamber 14 and sensor 32 are shown mounted on ceiling 38. Sensor 32 also actuates solenoids 48, 50 to pivot levers 40, 42 and release rods 56, 58 which retain flexible strands to reinforce the ablative sheet as it is formed and discharged from mixing chamber 14 through slot 14a. The slot may instead be a plurality of perforations. Alternative mixing fluids are pectin, polyethylene oxide or carboxymethyl cellulose and their appropriate catalysts. The system may be used indoors or outdoors.
