Abstract

128,627. Grace, C. J. Aug. 15, 1917. Spray carburettors.-In carburettors of the type described in Specification 11830/15 in which an assemblage of capillary tubes or passages can be. raised or lowered so as to bring more or less of the passages into action, the passages 15 are formed between two concentric tubes 13, 14, one of the tubes being cross-bored, as at 16, at different heights from each capillary passage, so that each passage comes into action as its crossbore is brought below a diaphragm 12 into the fuel space 11 fed from the float chamber 8 through a passage 9 with a light non-return valve 10. Co-axial with and supporting the tubes 13, 14 is an air-tube 18 which is actuated from the throttle valve and opens at its lower end into an air or gas chamber 20, the main air supply entering the choke-tube 1 from the inlet 2. The air chamber 20 communicates with the top of the float chamber 8 and has a branch 23 leading to a space 24 around the tube 13 to prevent fuel from being drawn up except through the capillary passages. The throttle valve comprises oppositely-moving apertured cylindrical segments 4, 6, the fuel-delivery orifices being situated close to the throttle outlet. The linkage mechanism which connects the air-tube and the throttle-actuating mechanism is adjustable to vary the travel of the tubes relatively to the throttle movement, the adjustment being effected from a distance through a wire. A spraying-cone 36 is provided near the delivery ends of the capillary passages, and the air mixes with the fuel and forms an emulsion therewith before mixing with the main air supply. The air or gas may be heated.
