Abstract

1286224 Catalysts AJINOMOTO CO Inc 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 22077/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A catalyst system comprising rhodium or a rhodium containing catalyst and a halogen or halogen containing promotor is used for the preparation of acetic acid by heating methyl formate. Rhodium metal, oxide, hydroxide, halide, inorganic or organic salts, e.g. Rh(SO 4 ) 3 , Rh(NO 3 ) 3 , and Rh(C 17 H 35 COO) 3 and organorhodium compounds, e.g. Rh 2 (CO 4 ) Cl 2 , Rh 2 (CO) 8 , Rh(CO)Cl[(C 6 H 5 ) 3 P] 2 , RhCl[(C 6 H 5 ) 3 P] 2 (CH 3 I) 2 , RhCl[(C 6 H 5 ) 3 P] 3 H 2 , RhCl(CO)[(C 6 H 5 ) 3 AS] 2 , RhI(CO)[(C 6 H 5 ) 3 Sb] 2 , and K 4 Rh 2 Br 2 (SnBr 3 ) 4 , may be used and the halogen may be free or as hydrogen halides, alkyl halides, or amonium and stibonium halides. Iodides are preferred and a ratio of rhodium to halogen of 1-1000 atoms halogen per atom of rhodium may be used. A carrier such as active carbon, alumina, silica gel, silica-alumina, magnesia or zeolitic molecular sieves may support the rhodium catalyst in gas phase reactions. The halogen promoter may be incorporated in the carrier supported rhodium catalyst or separately charged in the gaseous state to the reactor. Examples describe the use of bis(triphenylphosphine) rhodium carbonyl chloride, rhodium chloride trihydrate, dirhodium-tetracarbonyldichloride with methyl iodide and the preparation of an active carbon supported rhodium catalyst by calcining rhodium chloride trihydrate and bis(triphenylhposphine) rhodium carbonyl on the carbon bed.
