1286132 Finishing plastics strands SUTURES Inc 19 Aug 1969 [28 May 1969] 41258/ 69 Headings D1F and D1T A plastics, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, strand, i.e. a unitary structure of monofilaments or multifilaments which have been twisted, braided, entangled or spun into yarn, thread, suture or string forms, is finished (after hot-stretching and cooling by subjection to repeated flexion, as by one or more passages under tension over a series of sharp (but not cutting) edges, which may be provided by guide pins, positioned to effect at least a 30‹ change in direction of the passing strand, in order to cause relative movement between adjacent filaments of the strand and thereby enhance the softness and pliability thereof. A lubricant, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene or a silicone wax may be applied to the strand surface and within the interstices thereof after such flexion.
