Abstract

128,608. Westinghouse Machine Co., (Assignees of Kasley, A. T.). Aug. 11, 1916, [Convention date]. Caustic - soda a n d l i k e boilers.-Relates to motive fluid generators for torpedoes and submarine vessels of the kind in which the motive fluid is generated by the chemical reaction of a liquid on a metal, for example by the action of caustic soda solution on metallic aluminium. According to the invention, the liquid is forced from a reservoir 23 into a generator 10 containing the metal by means of a pump 25 driven by the propelling engine 12. The inlet piping 16, 21 is perforated and extends to all parts of the generator to prevent localisation of thereaction. The mouth of the outlet pipe 20, 15 is protected by a gauze 18 to prevent solid particles being carried away with the gases generated. A separator 11 and a regulator 13 are interposed between the generator and the engine. The engine is started by firing an explosive cartridge at 103 in the chamber 39 of the separator. The pressure of the explosion gases starts the engine directly cr forces a small quantity of caustic sod a solution from the chamber 39 into the generator, and the engine is started by the gases thus produced. The caustic soda solution is loaded into the chamber 39 through the pipe 31, which is then closed by a cap 53. In a torpedo, the cartridge is fired by the mechanism which starts the steering-gyroscope at the moment of launching. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also (1) the generation of motive fluids by the action of water on sodium or calcium dilute acid on sodium bicarbonate, and water and kerosene on hot copper oxide, (2) a relief valve 100, Fig. 1, on the conduit between the pump and the generator, - and (3) a drain cock 105, Fig. 2, for clearing the 'generator of liquid when the regulating valve 13 closes at the end of a run, a cartridge being fired into the separator 11 at the same time that the cock is opened in order to force the liquid out. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
