Abstract

1286037 Crash restraint cushions; steering wheels; collapsible steering columns EATON CORP 20 Jan 1970 2785/70 Headings B7B B7H and B7J [Also in Division F4] A steering wheel mounted inflatable crash restraint cushion 18 is inflated by gas from a reservoir 20 flowing through an annular passage 48 between the reservoir 20 and the walls 44 of a lined recess in the steering wheel hub, the thrust of the gas causing the steering column to collapse telescoping the members 30, 32, 34, within the members 24, 26, 28. The column is normally held in the extended position by sheer pins 36. and the member 34 has a shoulder 56 to deform the member 28 and prevent rebound. The cushion 18 is provided with a blow-out patch (22), Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), which allows gas to escape from the cushion above a certain pressure to prevent rebound of the vehicle occupant.
