Abstract

128,602. Back, W. E. Aug. 2, 1917. Steering and balancing.-In means for moving the ailerons of flying-machines simultaneously in the same direction. the shaft 2, which is rotated by lateral movement of the control lever 1 for adjusting the ailerons 10, 11 oppositely through connexions 6, 7, is mounted at one end on trunnions 22 and at the other end in a bearing 23 which may be raised or lowered in a slot 24 by means of a connexion 25 to the control lever. Fore-and-aft movement of the control lever thus moves the ailerons in the same direction, a spring 19 in the connexion 16 allowing this. The tail is simultaneously operated by means of a rod 4. Springs 12, 13 are provided in the connexions 6, 7, and a spring 27 connected to the control lever balances the action of the air on the ailerons. In a modification, the connexion 25 passes round a pulley on the shaft 2 and is connected at its ends to a yoke 33, Fig. 3, which is moved vertically within the control lever by rotation of a screw 39 by means of a head 40 fitted with a locking-device 42.
