Rotary converters; auxiliary protective or safety devices.-A rotary converter is provided with means whereby points in the alternating-current supply leads of n phases are converted together upon the occurrence of abnormal current flow in the load circuit to prevent flashing-over, such points carrying currents at a phase difference of 1/nth of 720 degrees. By this arrangement the armature windings become short circuited but the transformer secondaries, which are not interconnected, include a portion of the armature windings in their circuits. The diagram shows the application to a converter supplied with sixphase currents from a transformer 9. The relay 13 in the load circuit inter-connects the leads 19, 20, 21 from the secondaries 10, 11, 12 upon the occurrence of predetermined load conditions. These secondaries are independently connected tc the armature 4 by the usual diametrical connexions so that the leads 19, 20, 21 carry currents at 120 degrees phase displacement. The shortcircuit established places a portion of the armature winding corresponding to 60 electrical degrees in series with each secondary. The switching device 18 is comparatively quick-acting.
