Abstract
1284931 Non-conjugated polyenes; purifying cyclo-octene BP CHEMICALS Ltd 21 April 1970 [16 June 1969] 30392/69 Heading C5E Non-conjugated polyenes are obtained by reacting together (1) a cyclic olefin containing one or more olefinic double bonds in the ring, with (2) an acyclic mono- or poly-olefin, provided that neither reactant is a 1 : 2 or 1 : 3 diene or contains acetylene groups, in the presence of a homogeneous disproportionation catalyst comprising (a) a salt of Mo or W, e.g. MOCl 5 or WCl 6 , and (b) a Group IVb (Mendeleev) organometallic compound, e.g. tetra(n-butyl)tin, at - 100‹ to + 300‹ C. and a pressure from 10 mm. Hg to 2000 p.s.i.g. The Mo or W salt may contain triphenyl phosphine or carbon monoxide ligands. The example describes the co-reaction of cyclo-octene (pre-purified by drying over sodium wire and percolating through an activated silica column) with pentene-2 to yield a mixed product containing inter alia C 12-14 diolefins. Reference is also made to reacting cyclooctene with butene-2 to give 2,10-dodecadiene, and to reacting cyclooctadiene with pentene-2.
