Abstract

1284595 Plastics socket for fasteners G MOLYNEUX 2 Dec 1970 [18 Dec 1969 30 Jan 1970] 61619/69 and 4502/70 Heading F2H A socket fixing device 10 for building into mortar, concrete, or other solidifying structural material to receive nails, screws or like attachment devices comprises a resilient plastics device to grip an attachment device driven into it, the device being shaped and tapered such that it is keyed into the material, which thus resists withdrawal of the device, and having guide means extending from the narrow end for constraining attachment devices driven into it to diverge from a predetermined longitudinal line. The device, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is preferably formed from an integral plate-like moulding having two complementary elements 16, 18 joined by a thin transverse strip (14) about which the elements may be hinged together, as in Fig. 3, and fastened by means of peg 42 and coacting hole 44. Each element 16, 18 has a series of grooves 30 formed therein so that when the device is folded, complementary grooves define longitudinal holes for receiving attachment devices, each groove having a portion normal to the narrow end and a longer diverging portion partially blocked by thin, lateral webs 34, 36. External lateral grooves 50 and saw-tooth edges 26 assist in keying the device 10 into a wall, as does a core of solidifying material entering the central hole 45. Location lips 27, 28 with chamfers 40 may be formed at the narrow end of the device. As shown in Fig. 4 the device 10 is built into the mortar 52 between bricks 54, 56 with lips 27, 28 standing proud to serve as a guide for plastering, some plaster entering and becoming keyed in holes (29) in the lips. A nail 59 can then be driven into the device 10 and be gripped by the webs 34, 36 and by the resilience of the plastics material. The divergent path of the nail in groove 30 will further serve to resist extraction of the nail. In an alternative embodiment, as in Fig. 5 (not shown), the device is formed in two physically separate plate-like elements with no lips or central hole, but with grooves (62) of different sizes to receive nails or screws of different diameters.
