Abstract
128,436. Marks, E. C. R., (Stuart, .J. T.). July 17, 1918. Cells; electrodes.-An electrode comprises a number of thin metal plates closely adjacent to each other and separated from those of a similar opposite electrode by the minimum distance compatible with avoidance of short-circuit. The active portions may abut against opposite sides of a diaphragm. One form of electrode consists of parallel strips 2, Fig. 1, the rear ends of which are bent at right-angles and fused together. To the solid back thus formed are attached crosspieces 4 which fit over supporting pins in the frame members 7 of a cell., The flanges of the frames are flush with the ends of the strips, and clamp the diaphragms between them. Another form of electrode is made by folding a single thin sheet, as shown in Fig. 3. Electrodes may also be made from gauze or a plurality of wires. The projections may number 70 per inch. The electrodes may be used for the production of oxygen and hydrogen.
