Abstract
1283763 Poly-γ-methyl glutamate filaments AJINOMOTO CO Inc and NISSIN SPINNING CO Ltd 18 Aug 1969 [23 Aug 1968] 41079/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Poly-γ-methyl glutamate filaments are produced by extruding into a heated atmosphere a solution of the polymer in a solvent consisting of a mixture of a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon which is a good solvent for the polymer and another chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon which is a non-solvent for the polymer and which has a boiling point higher than the good solvent. The good solvent, which should have a boiling point lower than the melting point or decomposition point of the filaments formed, may be methylene dichloride, chloroform, 1,2- dichloroethane 1,1,2-trichloroethane or tetrachloroethane and the non-solvent for the polymer may be 1,1-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane, 1,3-dichloropropane or tetrachloroethylene. Trichloroethylene may also be used as a non-solvent, if a slightly higher proportion is used, relative to the good solvent, than with other non-solvents. The weight ratio of the non-solvent to the good solvent may be from 1 : 9 to 1 : 1. The coagulating ability of various non solvent chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons with respect to a solution of the polymer in a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon which is a good solvent for the polymer is determined by measuring the number of C.C.S. of the non-solvent which when added dropwise with stirring to a solution consisting of 7À2 grams of poly-γ-methyl glutamate having a degree of polymerization of 2,500 and 28À2 CCS. of 1,2-dichloroethane at 20‹ C. causes the polymer solution to develop a white turbidity and gelation. In the experiments turbidity occurred when 13 to 85 CCS. of the non-solvent chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons were mixed with the polymer solution. Hence a non-solvent is defined as one having a coagulating ability in this test of less than or equal to 85 mls; the coagulating ability of a good solvent is very low and may be regarded as effectively infinite. In further experiments solutions of poly-γ- methyl glutamate in various mixtures of the solvent and non-solvent chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons were heated to 50‹ C. and extruded through a spinneret into a spinning cell containing air heated to 90‹C. The filaments thereby formed could be stretched at stretch ratios up to 2À25.
