Abstract

1283380 Clocks H OBERGFELL [trading as KIENINGER & OBERGFELL] 19 Dec 1969 [20 Dec 1968] 62091/69 Heading G3T A photo-cell powered clock has a torsional pendulum 1 which is suspended from a plate 9 and is surrounded by fixed selenium cells 3 disposed in a configuration centred on the axis of the pendulum 1. The photo-cells 3 lie on the inner surface of a transparent or translucent cylindrical member 5 and the clock is encased by a plinth 7 and a transparent glass or plastics dome 4. There may be several axially spaced sets of cells, the cells being connected in series, parallel, or a combination thereof, or the or each cylindrical surface may comprise a single cell. The pendulum 1 is maintained either (a) by a clockwork mechanism 2, which is wound by a D.C. motor or other electro-magnetic mechanism powered by the cells 3, or (b) by pulses controlled by a transistor circuit and supplied from an accumulator which is charged by the cells 3. In alternative embodiments, the photo-cells (3') Fig. 2 (not shown) are arranged on the plinth beneath the pendulum in a chequer board, concentric, spiral or other pattern. The cells 3 may also be used to connect a light source to a battery when the ambient illumination falls below a pre-set level, in order to maintain irradiation of the cells.
