Abstract

1283165 Roller mills DOW CHEMICAL CO 15 March 1971 6887/71 Heading B2A [Also in Division B5] Strands of synthetic resin are chopped into pellets by a pair of rotating toothed drums, each drum having shearing teeth arranged to slidingly engage those of the other drum, the engaging face 33 of each tooth being generally radial and defining a relief angle A with the radius of between 0‹ and 30‹, the included angle B between the engaging face 33 and the non-engaging face 34 being between 10‹ and 45‹. Preferably the tip of each tooth has a small flat 35, and the rotation of the drums is synchronised e.g. by arranging that one drum is driven and imparts the rotation to the second to which a braking force is applied to keep the interengaging teeth smoothly meshing. The strands may be fed into the cutting drum from rolls driven by belt and pulley transmission from the first drum, variable speed or variable effective diameter pulleys being used (Fig. 3, not shown). For high-speed operation, especially with small diameter drums, a further roll is placed adjacent to the first cutting drum to bring the strands into close contact with the latter before they are fed around into the nip between the severing teeth. When cutting very viscous materials a mould release composition such as a polysiloxane is applied to the drum surface and when cutting freshly extruded material, or other material at high temperature, the drums are cooled e.g. by a water spray or by air, nitrogen or alcohol. The plastics strands to be pelletized are intended to be soft or rubbery and if hard or brittle material is to be cut it should be heated first, a bending test to categorise the material being given. A detailed dimensioned example of the pelletizing of a blend of 50/50 w/w polytertiary butyl styrene and polyvinyl chloride is described; other exemplary materials are polystyrene (at 245‹F), uncured rubber, plasticized polyvinyl chloride, rubber-modified polystyrene, rubber-modified polymethyl methacrylate and graft polymers of styrene and rubber. Working speeds may be as low as 1 foot per sec. or as high as 2000 ft. per sec.
