Abstract

1283134 Piezo-electric elements BENDIX CORP 29 June 1970 [25 July 1969] 31328/70 Heading H1E In a piezo-electric transducer a high tensile strength layer is bonded to the opposite faces of the transducer which are subject to tensile stress to improve the power handling capacity. The transducer (Fig. 1) consists of two ceramic piezo-electric discs 12, 22 arranged back-to-back. Each disc has a conductive coating e.g. silver or copper and has a metal backing plate 14, 16, the backing plates being separated by a spacer ring so as to produce an air space 20. Thin metal discs 24, 26 are bonded to the external faces of the transducer by an epoxy cement such that the surface tensile strength is increased to allow increased deflection. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3) a bender bar comprises a series of piezo-electric bars 30a, 30b . . . 42a, 42b connected side-by-side in series and back-to-back with segments between electrodes 29, 31.. 43 poled alternately such that the upper segments expand while the lower segments contract. Bonded to the external tensioned faces are layers of insulating material 44, 46 such as glass epoxy resin and outer metal laminate strips 48, 50. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) a flexural bar transducer is constructed similarly to the transducer in Fig. 1 with the backing plates 14, 16 and the air space 20 omitted such that each ceramic disc acts as a backing plate for the other.
