Abstract

1282937 Borehole investigation SCHLUMBERGER INLAND SERVICES Inc 5 Aug 1969 39042/69 Heading G1A In a gamma ray borehole investigating arrangement the detector output signals are segregated into at least a first group that corresponds to gamma ray energies in the vicinity of but extending downward from the K absorption limit for barium, and at least a second group that corresponds to a gamma ray energy range extending upwards from the barium K absorption limit, barium being an absorbing medium in the borehole mud. Additional segregation of hard and soft gamma rays is effected and the ratio of the two groups is used together, with the ratio of the hard and soft signals to determine the effects of the borehole barium. The source and detector housing is sprung into contact with the borehole wall and it includes a window of, for example, beryllium transparent to soft radiation, and having an effective atomic number of 11 or less. Ranges of 24 KeV to 33 KeV and 39 KeV to 51 KeV are given for the energies either side of the barium K limit and 39 KeV to 120 KeV and 240 KeV to 300 KeV are exemplified for soft and hard radiation. The determined figures are plotted by, for example, a galvanometer recorder to produce curves of formation chemical composition.
