Abstract
1282856 Gas turbines LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd 18 Jan 1971 [18 Feb 1970] 7739/70 Heading F1T The turbine rotor 4 in a gas turbine engine is surrounded by a stator shroud ring 1 of a material having an appreciably lower co-efficient of thermal expansion than that of the rotor. The materials may be stainless steel for shroud ring 1 and a nickel-chromium alloy for the rotor, the constituent proportions being specified. The shroud ring also surrounds a nozzle ring 2 carrying vanes 3, the nozzle assembly having a higher coefficient of expansion than shroud ring 1 so that a clearance 6 between vanes 3 and ring 1 in the cold state is reduced to zero at operating temperatures. However the same clearance 6 is maintained between rotor blades 5 and ring 1 under all conditions. The construction is applicable to regenerative gas turbines in which shroud ring 1 is surrounded by hot air from a heat exchanger.
