Abstract
128,273. Prins, H. J. July 9, 1917. Hydrogen.-In preparing hydrogen by the action of water or water vapour upon carbon or carbon-containing substances at a high temperature (300-600‹ C.) in the presence of a catalyst, which causes the simultaneous formation of carbon dioxide and not of carbon monoxide, a suitable catalyst consists of a mixture of one or more substances from each of the following classes : (1) oxygen-containing inorganic salts of alkalis or alkaline earths; or compounds from which such salts may be formed in the process, such as the oxides or hydroxides, which may absorb carbon dioxide, and (2) inorganic oxides or hydroxides which may act as acids such as oxides of boron, aluminium, silicon, tin, titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, and rare earth metals, or compounds from which such oxides or hydroxides may be formed in the process, such as aluminium or other carbide, or salts such as aluminium or tin chlorides which are hydrolyzed by the water vapour, or salts such as sulphates which are hydrolyzed after reduction by the carbon. In addition, oxides of iron, chromium, or manganese may be added. In an example, coke, sand, and phosphate of lime are mixed intimately and heated to 400-500‹ C., and then steam is passed over. The gas is washed with soda-lye to remove carbon dioxide.
