Abstract
1282716 Holography RCA CORPORATION 10 Sept 1969 [20 June 1968 (2) 10 Sept 1968] 43055/68 43082/68 43083/68 Divided out of 1280996 Heading H4D [Also in Division G2] Annular holograms are formed by locating an object on the optic axis of a coherent refence beam so that the reference beam only illuminates an annular area of a recording medium and interferes thereon with a coherent light beam from the object. A single laser beam 200 may be used, that part passing around an object 218 forming an annular reference beam. The central portion of the beam passes through a diffuser 216 and object transparency 218 and is diffracted to holographically interfere with the reference beam portion on an annular hologram plate 214. A circular diffraction grating may be used in place of the diffuser. Alternatively an annular prism 600 may be located at the periphery of a plane coherent light beam 604 to form two beam portions 606 which focus on an object and diverge therefrom to illuminate an annular portion 614 of a hologram plate 612. The object 610 is again illuminated by the central portion 608 of the beam 604. Examples are also given where an annular portion of a parabolic mirror is illustrated by a reference beam, the object being illuminated by a coherent beam passing through an aperture in the centre of the mirror. The hologram plate is then located intermediate the mirror and its focus. The initial beam can be split into two by any conventional mirror or prism arrangement. Real images are reconstituted by re-illuminating the annular hologram with an annular reference beam conjugate with the original reference beam. At any one time only a segment of the annular hologram plate need be utilized for one hologram. Consequently a plurality of adjacent holograms may be sequentially formed on one plate. Two examples are given where the annular hologram is formed without object information, this being included in the reconstructing beam, but one of the forming beams is modified by a multiple lens area. These are disclosed in more detail in Specification 1280996. Acoustic energy may be used in place of coherent light.
