Abstract
1282692 Measuring dimensions electrically T I (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd 4 May 1971 [8 May 1970] 22224/70 Headings G1N and G1U [Also in Division H3] To gauge the dimension of a workpiece air from a source is forced through a nozzle M, the back pressure in the nozzle being dependent on the dimension L. This pressure is applied to one side of a flexible diaphragm D whose other side is subjected to a back pressure controlled by a valve V which closes in dependence of the movement of the diaphragm. The diaphragm thus moves to an equilibrium portion dependent on the dimension L. In the invention the diaphragm itself directly closes the valve V, and is constituted by a metal or metalized material which forms, with a wall of the housing a capacitor whose value is indicative of the diaphragm displacement. The diaphragm may be a printed circuit board which may extend beyond the housing to carry the circuitry for measuring the capacitor. This capacitor, CD in Fig.3, controls the frequency of a multi-vibrator MV which feeds a diode rectifier circuit providing a current proportional to this frequency, the current being converted to a voltage by an amplifier E. The output is read on a meter MM which may be calibrated in length. This output may be fed to a "go; no-go" circuit in which upper and lower limits are set by potentiometers P1, P2, so that a lamp L1 or L2 lights up if the dimension is outside prescribed limits. A linear relationship between dimension and capacitance is achieved.
